|

I have not been running for that long and am a member of the Monday night group.
I am 40+ and over weight. I have in my short time running been plagued with injuries pulled calf and thigh. But my main problem has been sore calves after and during running, I had sorted the calf problem by having my running checked and getting some new shoes. I am know having problems with the back of one of my ankles, has any one any advice? A lad at work how has done some running has advised me to go to a physio! If this is a good course of action can anyone tell me of a good one locally and how much do they charge?

Hi,
had exactly the same problems when I started running last year. As you say, proper shoes fixed most of the the calf problems, but the sore ankles carried on for quite a few months. I suppose a lot of it is due to all the extra pounding they're suddenly taking, and it takes a while for them to get used to it. Ankles a particular problem for me when first running off-road.
Having said that, no harm in getting a proper professional opinion... no point in doing yourself permanent damage now and finding later that it could have been avoided. |

Alot of people have problems when they first start out.
It could be a variety of things together causing it. Like running too much, too far too often, running on hard surfaces is a bugger as your constantly pounding the same muscles, lack of proper stretching before and after, dehydration, being overweight.
It might be worth going to a physio if the problems are bad and dont imrove with proper warm ups/downs.
But im tight and prefer to spend my hard earned on other stuff. ( like fell shoes lol) |

I did find the phisio posted after i had put this on. I am worried I may be causing damage, i did a 3 mile race monday put ice pack on as soon as i got home and ibuprofen gel (wonderful stuff) but tue morning I could put my weight on it but I was hobbling a bit! by tue night it is relativly OK. Its stopping me doing my three sessions a week though!
So I think I will give the phiso a ring and see how I get on. Because at this rate it will be 10 years before I ill need to bye any fell shoes LOL and all my injuries have been on my left leg? Now my left hip is starting to play up a little. So thanks again. |

| I have been to Peter Morgan with a variety of injuries, including calf and can vouch wholeheartedly for him. Although a remedial masseur as opposed to a physio he is far better than any physio I have ever been to and what's more considerably CHEAPER! |

having had 4 sessions with Peter I did my first proper training session last night.
It was good to be back But it was almost like starting all over again. (as regards fitness level). |

Calves are fine still doing plenty of stretches though, tendon still gets a little tender and inflamed. I am still self massaging and applying ice as required.
I am going to build running back up slowly though. |
